What changed

From January 1, 2027, any sale, lease or power purchase agreement for a home solar system in Virginia has to be a written contract with specific terms, printed in at least 10-point type. (source: Virginia Register: Board for Contractors final regulation (18VAC50-22-260, -265) (opens in a new tab))

The contract must show the solar company's license number, any known subcontractors, the payment schedule and down payment, system size and production estimates, all fees, and your right to cancel without penalty within 5 business days. Disclosures about maintenance, warranties, savings estimates and interconnection must be on a Board for Contractors form that you and the company both sign. (source: Virginia Register: Board for Contractors final regulation (18VAC50-22-260, -265) (opens in a new tab))

A solar company that doesn't follow these rules commits a prohibited act under the Board's regulations and can be disciplined. (source: Virginia Register: Board for Contractors final regulation (18VAC50-22-260, -265) (opens in a new tab))
