How to check a contractor before you hire
Look up their license on your state board's website, match it to their ID, then get the insurance, bids and contract in writing. Here are the 7 steps.
Find your state's license lookup
The checklist
- Get their license number. Ask for it in writing, on the quote or business card.
- Look it up on the official state site. Use your state board's free lookup. Pick your state on our home page for the link.
- Check the details match. The name, business and address on the record should match the person and the quote.
- Check the status and the license type. It should be active, and the license type should cover the work you want done.
- Ask for proof of insurance. Ask for the certificate and call the insurer if you are unsure.
- Get more than one written bid. Compare the same scope of work. Be careful of a price far below the others.
- Sign a written contract before work starts. Read it all. Do not sign anything with blank spaces.
Rules on licenses, bonds, insurance and down payments differ by state. Your state page lists the official rules.
Common questions
Is checking a contractor license free?
Our guides are free. We link you to each state's own lookup, so check the official site for how it works.
What if I can't find the contractor?
Try the business name, the owner's name and the license number. If you still can't find them, ask the state board before you hire.
