Colorado general contractor license

No statewide general contractor license in Colorado

The State of Colorado does not issue a general contractor license. There is no state general contractor license to apply for or to look up. (source: DORA: Home & Repair (opens in a new tab))

• Example: Denver licenses contractors and requires a supervisor certificate (or a Colorado electrical or plumbing license) first. (source: Denver: Contractor Licensing (opens in a new tab))

Check with your city or county

Local rules vary. Before you start work, or before you hire someone, ask the city or county building or licensing office where the job is:

• whether a local contractor license or registration is needed;
• which permits the job needs and who must pull them;
• what insurance or bond the local office requires.

Some related work may still need a state license, for example electrical or plumbing work. See the state guide below.

State rules that may still apply

Electricians and plumbers need a DORA license. General contractors and roofers have no state license; check with your city or county before hiring. (source: DORA: Home & Repair (opens in a new tab), source: DPO: Electrical (opens in a new tab), source: DPO: Plumbing (opens in a new tab))
