CSLB license check: how to look up a California contractor license
Use the CSLB's free Check a License tool. Search by license number, business name or person name, then open the license detail page and check the status, classifications, bond and workers' comp. (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
Open the official CSLB lookup (official site, opens in a new tab)
How: Search by license number (digits only), business name or person name. For "John Smith Construction" type "Smith John Con". (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
Checked against official Contractors State License Board sources. See sources.
Step by step
- Open the official CSLB Check a License page (button above). (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
- Search by license number (digits only), business name, person name or HIS registration. For "John Smith Construction" type "Smith John Con". (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
- Type only the first 10 to 15 letters of a name. Results show 50 at a time. (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
- Open the license detail page for the right business. (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
What the results mean
- Classifications: the license code (such as B or C-10) must match the work. CSLB has 48 classes and certifications; see our class list. (source: CSLB Licensing Classifications (opens in a new tab))
- Bond: an active license needs a $25,000 contractor bond. The detail page shows bond history. (source: CSLB: Bond requirements (opens in a new tab))
- Workers' comp: required if they have employees. Some classes (C-8, C-20, C-22, C-39 and tree service) need it even with no employees. (source: CSLB: Workers' compensation (opens in a new tab))
- A license is needed for any job of $1,000 or more, counting labor and materials. (source: Business and Professions Code 7028 (opens in a new tab))
- Salespeople need their own Home Improvement Salesperson (HIS) registration. Ask to see the card and photo ID. (source: CSLB: Before applying for HIS registration (opens in a new tab))
Red flags when hiring
- No license number on the ad, business card, bid or contract. California requires it. (source: CSLB: Finding the right contractor (opens in a new tab))
- Their photo ID does not match the pocket license. (source: CSLB: Finding the right contractor (opens in a new tab))
- No fixed business address ("they work out of the back of a pickup truck"). (source: CSLB: Finding the right contractor (opens in a new tab))
- They have employees but no workers' comp. (source: CSLB: Finding the right contractor (opens in a new tab))
- A bid that is much lower than the others. (source: CSLB: Finding the right contractor (opens in a new tab))
- Asking for a down payment of more than 10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less. (source: CSLB: Contracts and binding agreements (opens in a new tab))
Common questions
Is the CSLB license check free?
Yes. The lookup on the CSLB website is free and needs no account. (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab))
What if the contractor isn't in the CSLB search?
Try fewer letters or the license number. If they still don't show up, treat them as unlicensed for jobs of $1,000 or more. (source: CSLB Check a License (opens in a new tab), source: Business and Professions Code 7028 (opens in a new tab))
Can CSLB get my money back?
Not directly. CSLB can discipline a contractor, but for money you may need small claims or another court. (source: CSLB: Filing a complaint (opens in a new tab))
